Description
In the aftermath of the Great Famine and the Land War, Martin Sheridan from Bohola, Co. Mayo, emigrated to New York in 1897, aged 16. In 1906 he joined the New York Police Department, rising up through the ranks over the course of his career. Martin was a talented athlete, and over the course of 12 years earned nine Olympic medals. He was also an avid nationalist, a passion inherited from his family in Mayo who were strongly involved in the politics of the time. This book provides a detailed account of this man’s life, which was cut short in 1918 when he died of Spanish flu at the age of 37.
