The North Mayo Heritage Centre runs a number of training courses and events throughout the year.
We are planning to expand this area of our work, focussing on natural and sustainable crafts and activities, providing opportunities for both children and adults to gain new skills, knowledge, understanding and experience in a fun and interactive way. We are working collaboratively on a number of projects, including the Wilderland Project, and will be hosting a number of events through these collaborations in the coming months and years.
The Wilderland Project in Mayo is a pioneering public art and collaborative conservation initiative focused on biodiversity restoration and exploring our relationship to nature.
It brings artists to Wild Nephin National Park, to respond creatively to the landscape and engage with local communities to explore their lived experience of place. Through community workshops, volunteer opportunities, and educational programmes, Wilderland will encourage people-led climate action. The North Mayo Heritage Centre is a partner organisation in the project and will host a number of public events and creative workshops.
Wilderland is a partnership project between the National Parks and Wildlife Service, North Mayo Heritage Centre, Mayo County Council, TASC Think-tank for Action on Social Change, and artists working in environmental awareness and sustainable arts practice. It is a recipient of the Creative Climate Action fund, an initiative from the Creative Ireland Programme. It is funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media in collaboration with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The fund supports creative, cultural and artistic projects that build awareness around climate change and empower citizens to make meaningful behavioural transformations.
